When Dilbert creator Scott Adams decided to design
the perfect home for the cubical-dwelling star of his comic strip,
he sought a little help from his friends. Over 3,000 Dilbert
readers contributed to the design of Dilbert’s Ultimate
House (DUH). Adams started by asking what sort of house Dilbert
would like to live in? It would have to be green, easy to clean,
energy efficient, and not have any “museum spaces” that
are rarely used. Readers contributed other ideas, such as a urinal
in Dilbert’s bathroom, solar energy, and rooms that could
be hosed down with a drain in the floor. Adams worked with energy,
design and construction experts to refine the readers’ ideas
into a spectacularly innovative plan. Although the DUH plan is
whimsical (including a tower shaped like Dilbert’s head),
it is also highly practical in many aspects.
In the interest of designing a home with very low
energy usage, DUH designers recommended autoclaved aerated concrete
(AAC) by SafeCrete for the exterior shell of the home. AAC was
chosen for its superior insulating properties. AAC can be used
structurally as well, entirely eliminating the planned 2x6 exterior
frame. AAC is approved for structural walls in all seismic zones,
including the imaginary location of Dilbert’s home somewhere
in the Silicon Valley.
AAC blocks are an ideal choice for green, energy-efficient
homes. The lightweight, pre-cast products are manufactured in
a closed-loop process that creates no waste stream. Millions
of tiny of air cells in the solid blocks add thermal inertia
to concrete’s characteristic thermal mass. The resulting
walls maintain an even inside temperature as the outside temperature
fluctuates throughout the day and night.
SafeCrete AAC is finished with stucco or stone
is extremely low-maintenance, which was another of Dilbert’s
goals. Weighing 1/3 to 1/5 the weight of traditional concrete,
SafeCrete AAC blocks are chosen by many do-it-yourself builders.
Even an overworked, out-of-shape engineer like Dilbert could
learn to install these blocks.
