Weather Resistant Worldwide, in every region and climate, thousands of structures have demonstrated the reliability and longevity of autoclaved aerated concrete. It does not rot or decay like wood or other organic materials. It does not rust like metal. Termites and other pests do not eat it. AAC will not burn. The millions of tiny cells in AAC cushion buildings from major force, preventing progressive collapse. AAC has withstood earthquakes in Japan, the frigid temperatures of northern Europe, the harsh salt air of the French Riveria, and the hillside fires of San Fransisco. Several AAC homes faced the triple-attack from the 2004 Florida hurricanes. One home in Pensacola withstood a direct hit from a 4-foot wall of water. In a development of over 200 homes, this AAC home was one of only a handful still habitable after the hurricane. It suffered a single crack in the wall directly hit – which engineers later determined was not a structural issue. The wall was simply patched. In Lake Wales, Florida, a contractor had added to his older home with AAC products. The 1200 sf addition suffered no damage from the hurricanes, while the stick-frame portion of the home was utterly destroyed. (Sorry, but we are still awaiting photos.) The 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan, also demonstrates the durability of AAC. Over 5,000 AAC homes in Kobe withstood this massive quake with no damage whatsoever. Around 300 homes received some minor damage, and 43 were slightly damaged when another house fell against them. The photos below show an AAC structure in Kobe after the earthquake. The other homes were all leveled by the earthquake or destroyed by the fires that followed. This AAC building is actually moved off its foundation, but the walls are still intact.
